2014 SWASAP Scholarship Application

Objectives

To financially support the Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs (SWASAP) students who embrace postsecondary education.

To honor the Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs (SWASAP) students who demonstrate leadership potential at school and in their communities.

Elegibility

To be considered, an applicant must be:
  1. A current TRiO participant with a minimum of 1 year of TRiO participation;
  2. Current college student enrolled in courses for the Fall Semester or High School Senior accepted into a postsecondary institution for the 2013-2014 year;
  3. In academic good standing with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on 4.0 unweighted scale or GED equivalency;
  4. Recommended by TRiO personnel who is a SWASAP member in good standing.

Selection Criteria

Application materials must demonstrate:
  1. Leadership Skills
  2. Potential for Continued Success
  3. Extracurricular/Community Involvement

Application Packet

Applicants must submit electronically:
  1. Completed Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs Scholarship Application (form on the next page).
  2. An essay with a minimum of 350 words (included in the next page of this application) from the applicant to the Scholarship Committee that addresses the following:
    1. "How Are You TRiO Strong?"
    2. Please include information regarding your history with TRiO and how you plan to utilize the information and experience you've gained through TRiO to further your future educational endeavors.
  3. Two letters of recommendation:
    1. 1 letter of recommendation from a current TRiO employee (current SWASAP Membership required) outlining the applicant's successful involvement in TRiO.
    2. 1 letter of recommendation from a non-family member outlining the applicant's successful leadership experience or extracurricular/community involvement.

    During the application process, you will be asked to submit the names/contact information for your desired references. Each reference will be sent a link with a passcode so that the recommendation letter can be submitted. After completing this application please verify that your references have received this email and have submitted the form.

Your TRiO director will be sent a link with a passcode so that the verification form can be submitted. After completing this application please verify that your Program Director have received this email and have submitted the form.

Deadline

The SWASAP Scholarship Committee Chair MUST RECEIVE the completed application with all supporting materials by July 1, 2014. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Awarding the Scholarships

The SWASAP Scholarship Committee will make recommendations to the SWASAP Board at the August, 2014 Board Meeting. Each successful applicant's TRiO Program Director will be asked to submit college enrollment verification at the beginning of the Fall 2014. Upon receipt of enrollment verification, scholarship checks will be sent to the Program Director for dispersal to student(s).
